"Courage starts with showing up and letting ourselves be seen."~Brene Brown

I am a licensed clinical social worker as well as a registered nurse and certified alcohol and drug counselor. I received my bachelors of science in nursing from Arizona State University in 1986 and my masters in social work from Portland State University in 2012. I became a certified alcohol and drug counselor in 2012. I have been working in the mental health field since 1985.  I have worked with children, adolescents, adults and families in mental health/addictions hospital, residential and outpatient settings.

Drawing upon these 30+ years of experience as a psychiatric/addictions nurse, social worker, and alcohol and drug counselor, I utilize an integrated holistic approach that is rooted in the following theories and approaches: narrative, client-centered, trauma and attachment informed, solution-focused, mindfulness, interpersonal neurobiology, family systems,  positive psychology and the current information we have about the brain and others. For couples work, I utilize both Gottman and Emotionally Focused Therapy models. Using your strengths and learning styles, I collaborate with you to develop a therapy path that will best meet your needs and goals.

I work with young adults, adults, couples and families with a broad array of issues/goals including addiction/substance use problems, anxiety, depression, grief, relationship struggles, communication skill building, chronic pain, trauma, stress management and more.

I have a passion for working with people who struggle with substance use disorders. I will provide encouragement and guidance for: finding the path to recovery via harm-reduction or abstinence-based approaches, facing the difficulties of early recovery, or  hanging in there when lifes hurdles challenge recovery along the way.  I am acutely aware of the impact of addiction on families and I will provide families with the much needed support that they deserve;I have been trained in Community Reinforcement and Family Therapy (CRAFT) and I often utilize the Nonviolent Communication principles developed by Marshall Rosenberg

I have many years experience supporting health care professionals with mental health/substance use problems and I can help you navigate the unique struggles of working in healthcare and managing ones own self-care.

In my experience of working at a university student health and counseling center, I discovered my passion for working with young adults. This life transition is often full of stress, anxiety/worry, substance use problems and relationship issues; the support of therapy can make a huge and positive impact.

Finally, I feel very strongly about outreach and public education and welcome opportunities to present lectures, workshops and consultation.
